Interest in the arts is strong in Fort Wayne. The arts community is supported by one of the oldest arts funding organizations in the country, Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne. As a result of Arts United’s efforts, locals have access to an excellent variety of performances and exhibits within the confines of their own city. Organizations such as Fort Wayne Ballet, Fort Wayne Civic Theatre, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Fort Wayne Youtheatre provide ample opportunity for artistic entertainment and education. An assortment of smaller galleries and art groups add even greater variety to the programs and exhibits available.
Performances can be enjoyed at several venues. Foellinger Outdoor Theatre hosts outdoor concerts and movies; IPFW Performing Arts Center includes a Fine Arts Building and the Purdue-Indiana Theatre; and The Embassy Theatre features Broadway musicals. Big name entertainment can also be enjoyed at the Memorial Coliseum.
Fort Wayne’s public recreational facilities are also extensive. The city manages 87 parks, including a botanical conservatory, a children’s zoo, four golf courses, four pools, an ice rink, and a nature preserve. Families can participate in many activities, including outdoor movies and concerts, camp programs for kids, playtime at the water playground, and hiking in and around the city. Both the Lindenwood Nature Preserve and Rivergreenway Park offer established trails for hiking. Rivergreenway is a 15.5-milelong, scenic park that runs along the banks of three rivers: St. Mary’s, St. Joseph and Maumee.
An institution of note is Fort Wayne’s own Indiana University - Purdue University (IPFW), a public university and home to the IPFW Performing Arts Center. IPFW offers many graduate, postgraduate and continuing education programs. The campus is situated next to St. Joseph River in northern Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne is also home to several private colleges, consisting of St. Francis, located in the center of the city. St. Francis specializes in preparing undergraduates and graduates for careers in professional nursing practice. Taylor University is a small campus dedicated to career-oriented majors such as marketing research, justice studies, practicum, evangelism and discipleship, educational psychology and social work. Tri-State University is yet another highly acclaimed college focused on degrees within the Ketner School of Business, School of Education, and the School of Academic and Professional Studies.
Fort Wayne residents enjoy the variety of four distinct seasons, without much in the way of extremes. High temperatures hit the mid-80s in July, and the coldest days in January rarely drop below the mid-teens. Annual rainfall averages about 35 inches, much of which falls in the spring and summer months. Snow is the story in the winter months, with an average of 31 inches falling annually.
